these days, more often than not, you and your squad have a “go to” place when you want to get shitfaced. for me and the valley goons (and the la crew, to a lesser extent), that place is zanzibar. i think my dude dahle put me onto it YEARS ago, and i been going back a whole lot ever since. here’s a laundry list of benefits from going here:
1. you may just meet the grey republic there. nuff said.
2. the music is seriously bangin. “quality” hosted by dj haul and mason cracks every saturday, and they’ve even had my favorite local dj STEVE 1-der there on occasion. all three of those dudes get it in on the turntables, and not that typical hollywood top 40 playlist bullshit either.
3. the mixed drinks are served in fuckin collins glasses. for those that don’t know, it’s more than 12 ounces. which is awesome.
4. table service is the lick here, and you get to pick who you’re server is. goose FTW!
5. entrance is free if you’re on the list before 10:30, and only 10 bucks afterwards. a big plus for you stingy alcoholics.
there’s also one BIG personal reason why i keep going back. a while back, oh, maybe 2 years or so, i was greeted at the door by a young lady around the same age as myself. standard affair, said who’s list i was on and gave my name. then she asks “yong yu? from nestle elementary?” wtf. why yes, that’s me! anyway, it turns out that this young lady was none other than a childhood friend of mine rosie, who goes by destiny rose, and now manages my favorite bar. talk about a quinky dink.
in any case, i was pretty stoked she remembered me, 3 feet, 20 years, and 100+ pounds later. i always remembered her. spunky, full of life, and fought a WHOLE lot of pretentious bitches at my school. like seriously. fist fought them. there’s always a few people you wish you hadn’t lost touch with, and she was one, so i’m definitely happy we linked up again. she’s taken care of the kid, and made sure i stayed drunk after a rough week. on top of that, she comes through with special drinks for the wife or my dudes, which is appreciated to no ends.
so if you’re ever in the west LA area, this should be one of your first spots. holla at destiny and tell her retro sent you!
